Anglesey Powerboat Training Centre
We are based at Gallows Point Beaumaris on the banks of the uniquely spectacular Menai Strait. The Menai Strait is famous for its beauty, wildlife, sheltered waters and of course tides. The sheltered waters attract many boaters; with plenty of marinas, piers and moorings, several places to launch and recover and the proximity for easy access to the rest of the north Wales coast.
While the Menai Strait offers shelter there are also phenomenal tides so our local instructors and skippers can give you some insights to when and where slack water can be found, safe passage and navigation and where you might find some back eddies to get out of the full force of the tide. The tidal range at the northern end of the straits can be over 7.5m on spring tides, so with some of Britain’s most challenging tidal conditions and navigation it’s a great place to learn under safe, skilled and professional instruction.
Our yard and fully equipped heated classroom are based at Gallows Point, Beaumaris where there’s also a chandlery, petrol station and several other marine based businesses.
Our Boats
We have the perfect boats for trainees.
Sea Dragon - a Pioner Multi Pro 5.3m with 75hp outboard. A highly versatile and robust boat that is also coded for commercial work, a fantastic little workhorse.
Aegir - a 5m Whaly boat with 60hp outboard. A solid & sturdy vessel, they are often used as saftey boats and for rescue operations.
Meet the instructors
Scott Waterman - Commercial Skipper for over 20 years, Scott is a Powerboat and First Aid instructor. Scott served most of his time in the diving industry and is more than happy to tell a tale or two of his adventures at sea.
Jake Waterman - Commercial Skipper, RNLI Lifeboat crew, and our Chief Instructor for RYA Powerboat & SRC Courses. Jake is an experienced Seafarer with a number of trans-Atlantic crossings under his belt and a degree in Nautical Science. Jake is always happy to work with you to ensure that we cover your requirements.
Hayden Roberts - Commercial Skipper, RNLI Lifeboat helm. Hayden is 'local lad' from Beaumaris, he is a powerboat instructor and has been on the water most of his life if not for work, then for pleasure.
